Abstract     Stomach cancer incidence decreases in Slovenia and other developed countries, but the disease remains an important cause of cancer death. The survival of stomach cancer patients is low, as the disease is mostly diagnosed in the advanced stage. The stomach cancer incidence declined from mid 1960s and is 25/100,000 nowadays in Slovenia. The five-year relative survival is 24%, what is less than European average. There is more stomach cancer in eastern part of the country. The risk factors for stomach cancer localized in the cardia are different from non-cardia stomach cancer some. The most important non-cardia risk factors are the infection with H. Pylori, smoking and improper diet (salty, smoked or cured meat: low intake of vegetables and fruit). The cardia stomach cancer risk factors are obesity, gastroesophageal reflux and diet high in animal proteins and fats. The appropriate screening test for stomach cancer is not known yet.
