Abstract     Background. There are different resons for tumefaction growth of oral cavity, face and neck. We can distribute these particular clinical cases into different groups: normal anatomical structure, evolutionary alterations, inflammation, traumatic reasons, cysts, hormonal changes, drugs induced changes, tumors and other reasons. Methods. Clinical department of maxillofacial and oral surgery in Ljubljana medical centre annualy carries out 22.000 medical examination all together, 9000 patients submitted medical examination for the first time. With the aid of the clinical computer program we wanted to find out what share takes part of oral cavity, face and neck tumefaction. We created 3 main groups: evolutionary alterations, inflammation changes and tumors. Results. 10% out of 9000 patients have been examinated due to tumefaction growth of oral cavity face and neck. Out of them 56% had inflammation induced tumefaction, 27% had tumor growth, 17% had evolutionary alterations. The pacient number with hormonal changes and drugs induced changes were negligible. Conclusions. Tumefaction of oral cavity, face and neck takes 10% share in maxillofacial patients in Ljubljana. Predominant reason are inflammatory changes in oral cavity, face and neck region.
