Abstract		Background. Minor or major haemorrhages of long duration from the gastrointestinal tract cause secondary chronic iron deficiency anaemia, which is treated by red cell concentrates only exceptiotially Conclusions. Patients suffering from chronic secondary iron deficiency anaemia are partially adapted to decreased oxygen capacity of the blood. It is necessary to eliminate the cause of chronic haemorrhages to prevent the worsening of anaemia and consecutive iron deficiency treated by iron per os or exceptionally intravenously. Substitution therapy by red cell concentrates is indicated only in acute urgent states, in cases with additional acute loss of blood such as urgent surgery, major trauma or acute infection.
