Abstract     In the following article the experiences of the single burn centre in treatment of critically ill burned patients by cultured epithelial autografts (CEA) are described. In the year 1993-2004 9 such patients were treated by CEA at the departement of plastic surgery and burns, Clinical centre Ljubljana. They sustained an average burn of 71% total body surface area (TBSA) with an average subdermal burn of 57% total body surface area. Burn wounds were treated by early and sequential excisions, split thickness skin grsfts, cadaveric skin and CEA. An average of 20% TBSA was treated by CEA. Four patients died in the course of tratment. 30 days post transplantation CEA were taken in 62% of the area treated (min.: 10%, max.: 80%). 9% TBSA was healed by CEA (min.: 2%, max.: 20%). CEA were vital in the treatment of critically ill burned patients in this series.
