Abstract     Introduction. The last half of the twentieth century has witnessed a sustained improvement in the survival of patients suffering thermal injury. The single most important development has been the etablisment of centralized burn care, which made possible advances in fluid resuscitation, life support techiques, prevention of infection, wound care, adequate nutrition. Patients and Methods. During the period 2000 - 2005 18 patients were admitted to the Surgical Intensive Therapy (SICU), wich is a part of anaesthesiology department in General hospital Maribor. Criteria for the admission were not precisely determinated. The desicion to admit the patient depended on severity of the burn after consultation between surgeon, anaesthesiologist and intensivist. Results. From 18 severe burned patients admitted in SICU during the period 2000 to 2005, 9 patients died. Discussion. With optimal care young people with burns of more than 80 per cent of total body surface area stand a reasonable chance of survival. Improvements in survival have gradually led to a shift of emphasis in burn care towards aspects of care, such as rehabitilation and quality of life. The complexity of care has led to the concept of the multi-dicsiplinary burn team in which all aspects of care are coordinated in an integrated approach to clinical management (1). Conclusion. The concept of threating crtically ill burn patients in Central Surgical Intensive Care developed in General Hospital Maribor have shown the same good results as in centralized burn units.
