Abstract     Algal communities were sampled and analysed at six border rivers: Dragonja, Sotla, Mura, Drava, Kolpa and Čabranka, with special emphasis on the Dragonja river. The samples were collected in regular three months intervals in the years 2004 and 2005. At five sampling sites on the Dragonja river and at the single site on its tributary Pinjevec, 238 algal taxa were established. Among them 66 were recorded for the very first time in Slovenia. The highest number (38) of the taxa recorded for the first time was determined in the Dragonja estuary. Marine and brackish species, which did not occur at other sampling sites, were predominating. The algae occurring in Slovenian brackish waters have not been studied so far. Altogether, 155 species and varieties of algae (of eight classis) were determined in the Sotelsko jezero. 36 taxa were new to Slovenia. High species diversity was established in the lethargies of the Mura river. Altogether, 78 species and varieties of diatoms were determined. Species Eunotia implicata and Stauroneis legumen are new to Slovenia. In the Drava, Kolpa and Čabranka rivers species which are not considered as rare or endangered were determined. In the Drava river species typical for more polluted waters in Slovenia were present and on the other hand in the rivers Kolpa and Čabranka species typical for less polluted waters were established.
