Abstract     Clostridium botulinum is a Gram positive, strictly anaerobic, sporeforming bacterium, that produces seven different types of neurotoxin. Human botulism is usually caused by neurotoxins type A, B, E and F. Botulism occurs after the ingestion of food contamined by a preformed neurotoxin of bacterium C. botulinum. Spores of C. botulinum are worldwide distributed in the soil. The geographical distribution of C. botulinum has been extensively studied in Europe, United States, Australia and Asia. In our research, the distribution of C. botulinum in the soil of Gorenjska have been examined. A total of 400 samples were tested. We used the mouse bioassay and mouse neutralization test for detection of C. botulinum neurotoxins. C. botulinum types A, B and C were detected in 12 samples (3%). Type B was found in 7 samples (58.3%), type A was present in 3 samples (25%) and type C was found in 2 samples (16.7%). Type B was found in samples obtained from grass-land and from cultivated field, type A was obtained from forest soil and from cultivated field, type C was obtained from grass-land and from riverside. The association between the occurence of C. botulinum types A, B and C with certain soil samples was not statistically significant (P>0,05).
