Abstract     The role of radiology in the diagnosis and management of respiratory infections in the immunocompetent adult is described in a review. The imaging of sinusitis, community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia is discussed. Uncomplicated sinusitis does not require radiological imaging. However, when symptoms are recurrent or refractory despite adequate treatment, further diagnostic imaging may be indicated. Computed tomography is imaging method of choice. Plain radiography has a limited role due to high rate of false negative results. Chest radiography has a pivotal role in the diagnosis of pneumonia. The role of imaging is not limited to the detection or exdusion of pneumonia but involves the radiologist in the etiologic workup, in the establishment of a differential diagnosis, in the follow-up procedure and, if necessary, in planning additional diagnostic procedures.
