Abstract     The paper reviews Slovenian and foreign clinical guidelines for bacteriological diagnosis of pneumonia. Microbiological possibilities for the diagnosis of typical and atypical bacterial pathogens are described. Sputum analysis is evaluated in details. The new immunochromatographic urinary antigen assay for the early diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia is described. Microbiological diagnosis for the atypical pathogens such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila has been limited because traditional culture methods are time consuming with special requirements for their growth. As a consequence the laboratory diagnosis of atypical pathogens largely relied on the serological testing. Recently introduced molecular methods such as the PCR offer a better approach for the rapid detection of these three pathogens in clinical specimens.
