Abstract     Viral respiratory infection in children is a common disease. It is caused by different respiratory viruses. Certain diagnosis is made by medical history, clinical picture and virologic investigations. Searching for the etiology of the disease is important because specific antiviral treatment is possible. Antibiotic treatment is indicated only in bacterial superinfection. Viral respiratory infections in adults are the most common cause of acute morbidity. Usually, the course of the disease is mild and only symptomatic treatment is needed. Specific antiviral treatment is used only in certain cases and only for few etiologic agents. We should have in mind epidemic or even pandemic threat of influenca. Diagnostic algorithm in laboratories is as follow: immunodetection of viral antigen, isolation of virus on cell culture and/or PCR and serology.
