Abstract     Diarrhoea is one of the most common diseases for which the patients seek medical help. More than 90% of all cases of acute diarrhoea are caused by enteropathogenic bacteria, viruses or parasites. Due to diversity of possible causative agents it is important to know their epidemiological and clinical characteristics. In this way inappropriate or unnecessary microbiological testing can be avoided. Dehydration is most frequent and most dangerous complication of diarrhoea but can be managed with relatively simple procedures. Antibiotic treatment is secondary and necessary only in special circumstances that are described in the artide. A proposal for the stepwise management of adult patients with diarrhoea in primary and hospital practice is presented in the article as well as indications for microbiological testing, antibiotic therapy in hospitalization.
