Abstract     Skin and soft-tissue infections are common. The majority of these infections in immunocompetent patient are caused by gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus group A and Staplcylococcus aureus. Clinical assessment of the severity of infection is difficult; knowledge of risk factors and careful medical history with physical examination are helpful in establishing the correct diagnosis. Impetigo, erysipelas, folliculitis, furuncles and carbuncles may be treated by physicians of family practice. ln the majority of these infections additional laboratory examinations are not necessary. Patients with soft-tissue infections accompanied by signs and symptoms of systemic toxicity (cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis) should be admitted to the hospital immediately and a definite etiologic diagnosis should be established. The treatment strategy should be based upon appropriate Gram stain, blood culture, needle aspiration and skin biopsy.
