Abstract     Cough is an important symptom of illness in children. The three most common causes of chronic cough in children are asthma, respiratory tract infections, and gastrooesophageal reflux. Treatment of cough should be directed at the underlying cause. In addition, cough is often treated symptomatically when it becomes ineffective or troublesome to the patient. In the article, the two major groups of drugs most frequently used for the symptomatic treatment of cough are presented; antitussive drugs, which inhibit the cough reflex, and drugs that alter the physicochemical properties of mucus and alleviate the cough. The mode of action and therapeutic use of drugs are discussed.
