Abstract     Purpose. Preoperative endovascular treatment in patients with glomus jugulare tumors is described. Patients and methods. We embolised five consecutive patients with glomus tumors in cervical and petrous region. The tumors showed filling arteries for the tumor arising from the external carotid artery were shown at selective external carotid arteriography. There were no angiographicaly visible collateral arteries to the internal carotid complex. The venous blood was derived into ipsilateral jugular vein. Microcatheter system was superselectively placed into the feeding arteries and embolisation with microparticles was performed. Results. After the embolization of tympanal branches of the external carotid artery, symptoms diminished. After the closure of the main feeders we noticed filling of some smaller arteries that were not present before the occlusion of the mean feeders. We stopped the procedure at that level because the patients were operated later on. Conclusion. Preoperative endovascular treatment of glomus jugulare tumors has very important role in treatment algorithm. Embolization shortens the operation time, enables better visualization of operative field, reduced the loss of blood in these highly vascularised tumors and can contribute to avoid major surgical complications such as a massive hemorrhage.
