Abstract     Uterine artery embolization (UAE) represents a new intervention radiology method for treatment of uterine fibroids. At Maribor Teaching Hospital it has been performed since 2001. UAE was performed in 64 patients, majority with a solitary uterine fibroid. At the end of the first month we made controls with ultrasonographic device (US), after 3, 6 and 12 month we controlled the size of remnant fibroids with magnetic resonance tomography (MR). All patients were asked to evaluate the success of treatment. The mean diameter of the fibroids prior to UAE was 63 mm, and the majority of them was solitaire and located transmural. The procedure was successful in 62 patients (96.8%). In the first month post UAE two submucous fibroids were eliminated spontaneously, the rest were decreased by 54.0% three months after the procedure. The leading symptom improved by over 72.7% three months after UAE and about 91% of women believe that their quality of life improved significantly after UAE. They estimated the degree of improvement at an average 58.6%. Our results are similar to results in other institutions worldwide and show that UAE is an effective and safe method for treatment of symptomatic fibroids of the uterus and represents an alternative for surgical treatment. Our patients are satisfied with the results of the procedure.
