Abstract     The association between deep venous thrombosis and cancer has long been recognized. Venous thrombosis is a well known complication of cancer and is correlated with worse prognosis. It might be also a marker of an otherwise occult cancer. With relatively simple diagnostic methods it is possible to detect the majority of subsequent cancers in patients with deep venous thrombosis, but unfortunately the cancer is at that moment already in advanced stage. So far cancer screening methods did not prove to be beneficial in patients with idiopathic venous thrombosis. However, diagnostic procedures aimed to discover highly curable or treatable cancers such as lymphomas and early stages of ovarian, breast and prostate cancer are, seem to be justified in patients with high risk for each particular cancer.
