Abstract		Cancer patients are at the highest risk for venous thrombosis as surgical patients and as hospitalized medical patients. In these circumstances primary prophylaxis of venous thrombosis with low molecular heparin in high preventive doses is used and is combined with mechanical prophylaxis in very high risk patients. In very high risk surgical patients, also extended prophylaxis for a few weeks after discharge is recommended. systemic cancer treatment and central venous catheters in ambulatory cancer patients are currently not an indication for primary prophylaxis of venous thrombosis.
