Abstract		To successfully diagnose of psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence it is necessary to know the basic principles of psychological and social development, the characteristics of psychopathology and the features of the classification of these disorders. This contribution discusses emotional disorders from the spectrum of anxiety and depression, which occur frequently in their diverse presenting forms in the developmental period and the rarer bipolar disorders. The clinical picture of emotional disorders in children and adolescents is described and those developmental factors that influence it and themselves form the symptoms of these disorders are set out. The most important guidelines in the management of emotional disorders in the developmental period, which the doctor who encounters the child and adolescent must know and adhere to, are presented, and the indications for referral of the child with emotional disorders for psychiatric treatment are cited. In the contribution the role of those closest to the child is also emphasised, both in the recognition and ongoing management of these disorders.
