Abstract     The article describes the most common psychotic disorders, from acute and transitory to chronic disorders - schizophrenia. Schizophrenia most often has a slow and insidious onset in adolescence; hence early recognition is crucial. The prodromat phase, which could be misdiagnosed as an adolescent crisis, is also described in detail. The laboratory and imaging diagnostic evaluation, which must always be performed at the first psychotic episode, is stressed. This is important in order that a possible organic cause, whose clinical manifestation can mimic a psychotic disorder, is not overlooked. Pharmacotherapeutic and other procedures used in the management of an acutely psychotic and/or violent adolescent are described. These adolescents present a significant problem since there is no closed (intensive psychiatric) unit for such patients in Slovenia.
