Abstract     Traditional medical techniques have been used throughout history and transferred from generation to generation to the present day. The attitude towards unconventional treatment changed from one era to another. Today such treatments can be divided into the following categories: unconventional techniques, alternative medicine, charlatanism and quackery. In the USA around half the population uses one of the unconventional or alternative methods, while in Europe this percentage is around 40%, with our estimate for Slovenia being around 45%. Besides conventional medicine a new parallel health care system has emerged in Slovenia that is not supervised scientifically, organisationally or in regard to taxation. Unconventional techniques, such as acupuncture, manual therapy, homeopathy and herbal medicine are already being taught in medical schools, although the efficacy and safety of such therapies have not been verified through scientific studies. Alternative medicine is a common term used to describe activities closely linked to human health, but not recognised officially. The author sees the reasons for the development of this new parallel health care system in the depersonalisation of the current system, its instrumentalism and the increased use of chemicals. Manual therapy encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders of the motor system. It is also used in preventive medicine, in diagnosing and in treatment. The underlying medical knowledge, as well as the possibility of injuries, complications and contraindications, are key differences between manual therapy and chiropractic medicine. Treatment includes massages, mobilizations and manipulations. Acupuncture, one of the main branches of traditional Chinese medicine, is based on the Chinese philosophy of a holistic view on health, which relies on different principles, such as the law of five elements, Yin or Yang energy and the Qi theory.
