Abstract     OBJECTIVE The objective of this work was to determine the etiology of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in the north-eastern part of Slovenia (Pomurje region) together with demographic, epidemiological and clinical data on 25 patients from this region who were diagnosed and treated at the General Hospital in Murska Sobota between 1986 and 2003. PATIENTS AND METHODS Medical records of 25 patients with a discharge diagnosis of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome who were either hospitalized at the General Hospital in Murska Sobota or referred to an infectiologist as outpatients were analyzed in order to identify criteria for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome that included a clinically compatible illness. At least two of three main clinical criteria (fever > 38 degrees C, acute renal failure, thrombocytopenia) and demonstration of infection with hantaviruses by serological testing using indirect fluorescent assay and enzyme immunoassay were needed. All patients who fullfilled the required criteria qualified for this retrospective study. End-point titers of neutralizing antibodies were determined using the focus reduction neutralization test, with the aim of further validating the serotype of the infecting virus. Data including demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations and laboratory parameters were also collected from the patient's records. In addition, all available follow-up records (at least two months after the first visit) were examined and data on general health, blood pressure, basic blood and biochemical examination, and urine analysis were collected. RESULTS Infection with Puumala virus was demonstrated in 23 patients and Dobrava virus infection in two patients. The median age of patients was 39 years; 19 were male. The patients primarily had outdoor occupations. Most of the cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome occurred between May and August. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
