Abstract     Background. Syncope is a common phenomenon. It affects approximately 30 - 50% of population. Despite that, there was very little epidemiological research devoted to this The epidemiological data of reflex syncope are often contradictory if they exist. The reason is the definition and classification of syncope have been changing in the last decades and only small and specific groups of the population were studied. That is why there is lack of data about the incidence of reflex syncope in both genders and different age groups. Aim. We attempted to determine the incidence of the types of reflex syncope in different age groups and the influenee of gender on the occurence of the individual types of reflex syncope. Our aim was also to asses which type of the reflex syncope is the commonest in a particular age group. Hypothesis. There is no difference in the incidence of reflex syncope between genders and different age groups. The incidence of all types of reflex syncope is the same in all age groups and in both genders. Methods. There were 5568 patients in our research. They were out-door patients sent to neurological department because of yet unidentified transient disturbances of consciousness. We used a head-up tilt table test to set a diagnosis. We grouped results according to gender and type of syncope. We analyzed the occurence of the types of reflex syncope in both genders and different age groups. The method of logistic regression, t-test for unpaired samples, Mann-Whitney test and x2 test were used for comparative and statistical analysis. Statistieally significant difference was p < 0,05. Results. Vasovagal syncope appeared in 80 %, vasodepresory syncope in 15% and mixed type syncope in 5% of all individuals with positive results (n = 2305). (Abstract trunacted at 2000 characters)
