Abstract     Objective. To compare the short-term neonatal outcomes in triplet and single pregnancies matched for gestational age in Slovenia. Methods. Data from the National Perinatal Informational System (NPIS) that incorporates records from January 1997 to December 2002 were reviewed. Neonatal outcome for all triplets with gestational age from 26 to 35 weeks who were admitted to neonatal intensive care units in Slovenia were compared to singletons who met similar criteria during the same period. Results. Ninety triplets met the inclusion criteria and were compared to 1623 singletons. 91.8% of triplets had been born preterm, and cesarean section was the only mode of delivery. The two groups were comparable with regard to gestational age and gender; the birth weight, however, was lower in the triplets group. Neonatal morbidity did not differ between singletons and triplets (except for increased OR for patent ductus arteriosus in triplets) when corrected for gestational age and gender. Conclusion. Triplets have similar neonatal outcome to singletons when matched for gestational age. Outcome is dependent on gestational age.
