Abstract     Hyperlipidemia is an elevation of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. These lipids include cholesterol, cholesterol esters (compounds), phospholipids and triglycerides. They are transported in the blood as part of large molecules called lipoproteins. When hyperlipidemia is defined in terms of a class or classes of elevated lipoproteins in the blood, the term hyperlipoproteinemia is used. Hypercholesterolemia is the term for high cholesterol levels in the blood and a high level of triglycendes is called hypertriglycendemia. If there is an elevation of both, we speak of mixed hyperlipidemia. The primary clinical manifestations of hyperlipidemia are atherosclerosis, ischemic cardiovascular disease, pancreatitis, and xanthomatosis. The major ischemic vascular diseases are coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease and cerebrovascular disease. Treatment of hyperlipidemia requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes lifestyle modification in addition to medical therapy. Our challenge as physicians is to identify patients who are at high risk of developing ischemic vascular disease and prescribe an appropriate treatment program. The aim of this article is to emphasize the importance of controlling hyperlipidemia in patients with acquired combined hyperlipoproteinemia to reduce atherosclerosis and the incidence of ischemic vascular disease.
