Abstract     Hypertriglyceridemia is a rare but well-known cause of pancreatitis. It may arise as a result of severe genetic defects in lipolysis or, more commonly, from moderate primary hypertriglyceridemia that is exacerbated by a secondary cause (e.g. poorly controlled diabetes, alcohol use or medication). The clinical course in hyperlipidemic pancreatitis is not different from that of pancreatitis due to other causes. Reduction of triglyceride levels to well below 11.3 mmol/I prevents further episodes of pancreatitis. The mainstay of treatment includes dietary restriction of fat and lipid-lowering medication.
