Abstract		The pleura is the membrane enveloping the lung and covering the inner surface of the chest wall and diaphragm. The visceral and parietal pleura have a different histology. Disorders of the pleura can be caused by pleura-specific diseases or by diseases of thoracic or abdominal organs. This paper includes a precise description of pleural anatomy and histology as well as of the etiology and epidemiology of pleural diseases. The most common pathology of pleural disorders is mentioned. The physiology and pathophysiology of pleural effusion is elucidated.
