Abstract     If after careful clinical history and examination a pleural disease is suspected, the etiology needs to be established to enable correct treatment of the patient. An affected pleura presents as pleural thickening, pleural effusion, hemothorax or pneumothorax. The first examination is usually chest radiography. Pneumothorax, hemothorax and massive pleural effusion necessitate immediate treatment Most common are patients with pleural effusion. The diagnostic procedures to identify their etiology are presented. In primary care a suspect clinical history requires a thorough medical examination and referral to a specialist institution where chest radiography or ultrasound examination is used to identify a pneumothorax or pleural effusion. Further diagnostic procedures and treatment should be carried out in a hospital setting.
