Abstract     Due to the fact that COPD in its early stages is frequently an undiagnosed disease, epidemiologic data underestimate the real condition. Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor. Obstructive syndrome can be detected by office spirometry. Cigarette smokers aged over 40 years and those exhibiting symptoms should be tested. The family physician should set up a register of COPD patients and assess the patients' condition regularly. He should also register other activities in the treatment process. Not only medication but also education of the patient, psychological support and other activities in pulmonary rehabilitation are very important. We have to encourage the patients to quit smoking and promote regular physical adivity and a healthy diet
