Abstract     In developed countries human life expectancy has increased during the latter half of the 20th century and geriatric infectious diseases have become an important issue in modern medicine. Infectious diseases in the elderly are more common and associated with poor prognosis. Infections in the elderly also have distinct features with regard to epidemiology, clinical presentation, laboratory results, diagnostic procedures, prognosis and treatment. The most common signs of infection in the elderly are non-specific and similar to those seen in geriatric non-infectious diseases, making infectious diseases more difficult to identify, particularly in their early stages. Manifestations such as falls, delirium, anorexia, generalized weakness and altered mental status are often the only sign of serious infection. Fever, a cardinal sign of infection is absent or blunted in 30% of welldocumented severe infections in the elderly. Sepsis remains the leading cause of death in intensive care units. Early recognition and appropriate therapy is still a cornerstone of the prevention of multiple organ failure and death.
