Abstract     The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of two-dimensional transvaginal ultrasonography in estimating the size of tumor mass in patients with cervical cancer and to compare it with histopathological measurements in operatively removed tissue. We wanted to . establish the accuracy of ultrasonographicaly estimated size of the tumor mass in comparison with actually valid clinical stage of the disease and connection of ultrasonic ehogenicity and histopathologicaly defined grade and type of tumor. We also wanted to establish the possibility to determine infiltrated lymph nodes according to ultrasonographic size and characteristics of the tumor mass. Methods: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data of 49 patients with cervical cancer who underwent radical surgical procedure and pelvic lymphadenectomy between January 1995 and December 2003 was performed. All patients have had preoperative clinical staging and two-dimensional transvaginal ultrasonographic examination to determine the size and ultrasonographie characteristics of tumors. Operatively eliminated tissue was analyzed by histopathologist. Statistical methods: Correlation test, Chi-square test, t-test, method of multiple comparisons and multiple logistic regression were uscd. Sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonography were calculated for estimating the size of tumors and metastasing into pelvic nodes. Results: Ultrasonographicaly estimated size of tumor correlated well with histopathologicaly measured size of tumor. We did not find any connection between ultrasonographic characteristics and histopathological grade, type or clinical stage. The ultrasonographicaly estimated size of tumor is a good predicting factor to determine infiltrated lymph nodes. Tumor ultrasonographic characteristics are not useful in predicting lymph node metastases. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
