Abstract		The proportion of older people attending emergency departments is increasing. The article presents some characteristics and needs of elderly people at emergency medical department. Older people need to be assesed and treated by health care professionals who recognise the effect of old age on diseaase presentation. They often require more intensive nursing care than younger patients due to diminished selfcare. Comprehensive assesment, help with activities of daily living including empathy, dignity and respect are crucial determinant of care.
