Abstract     The liver plays an important role in haemopoiesis and synthesis of coagulation proteins: liver disease is associated with a broad range of haematological abnormalities. Anaemia occurs in up to 75% of patients with chronic liver disease. Leucocyte abnormalities range from neutrophilia to neutropenia and lymphopenia. Defects of platelet number and function arise due to the effects of liver disease, immune mechanisms and splenomegalia. Haemostatic abnormalities include impaired synthesis of clotting proteins, synthesis of abnormal clotting proteins, quantitative and qualitative platelet defects and enhanced fibnolytic activity.
