Abstract     On 1 June 1961 the hitherto combined Department of Obstetric and Gynecology was divided in two - the Department of Gynecology and the Department of Obstetrics, and the latter became an independent hospital department. It was the only one in all of that-day Yugoslavia to carry out prenatal supervision and modern managing of labor and delivery exclusively. Bogo Skalicky, the first Head of this independent Department of Obstetrics, applied his wide knowledge and rich experience to lead it, raising it to clinical level in view of organization as well as contents. Apart from its unfavourable consequences that only became evident after several decades, the division also had some favorable consequences since particularly the professional level improved significantly. During this time clinical obstetrics in Maribor reached its peak performance, becoming the leading institution in its special field, not just in Slovenia but also in the entire Yugoslavia of that day. In the stated period of time the Maribor Department made the greatest professional advances in the field of active managing of labor and delivery, in amnioscopy, pH-metry, amniocentesis, treatment of rhesus hemolytic disease, intrauterine fetal transfusion, US diagnosis, and reanimation of the neonate. Most of the stated novelties were introduced in 1966 by Viljem Brumec and with the cooperation of Anton Veingerl, Igor Japelj, Edvard Glaser and Niko Jesenovec.
