Abstract     Genetic counseling is a communication process, the intent of which is to provide information about genetic disease or the risk of such a disease. Ethical decision-making is based on the principles of autonomy, beneficence and justice. In pregnancy appropriate counseling has to be offered to the individuals at high risk of having or of transmitting a specific genetic disorder, when a prenatal screening test yields a positive result, when ultrasound examination reveals a structural fetal anomaly, or after teratogenic exposures during pregnancy. The recommendation to the patient or the couple about appropriate prenatal diagnostic testing should be based on cirrent medical knowledge, the concern for the couples best interests, and a shared discussion on the risks and benefits, the needs and wants of the couple. A counselor should be using nondirective counseling with a couple when discussing test results and the option whether or not to continue the pregnancy. Much attention has to be given to psychological confusion and anxiety, and to the prognosis and recurrence risk.
