Abstract     The clinician's task is to accurately assess the individual patients desire for information. That is sometimes particularly difficult since he must take into account two realities, which obey two different ways of thinking: the scientific rationality and the human perspective. For other physicians such as the perinatologist it is very hard to break bad news. In everyday perinatal practice they involve situations such as failure of in vitro fertilization or embryo transfer, ultrasound diagnosis of early pregnancy arrest or fetal malformation, positive triple test, genetic abnormality, fetal death, and malformation discovered at birth. The bad news must be announced while the physician him/herself is distressed by the diagnosis, by the shock it might cause the parents, by the fear of their aggressive reaction or of becoming involved in legal proceedings. Numerous protocols have been drawn up to help health care professionals manage perinatal loss. But everyday practice shows that strict adherence to protocol can generate dissatisfaction among the parents. Frequently the lack of receiving information and examining parental reactions to the message contributes to such problems. Listening to their initial reaction often avoids conflict and allows the obstetrician to meet their needs and agree on a common objective. For this very reason our paper treats the problem from a broader perspective.
