Abstract		Heart transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with advanced chronic heart failure. In Slovenia we performed 51 heart transplant procedures in the period from 1990 to 2006. The outcome of cardiac transplant recipients depends on adequate recipient and donor selection, and careful therapeutic management in the early and late post-transplant periods. At the time of transplantation we routinely implant pacemakers which allow for measurement of ventricular evoked potentials and thereby aid in early detection of cardiac rejection and infection episodes. In collaboration with University of Graz we have developed a left ventricular assist device programme to serve as a bridge-to transplant for selected patinets on the transplant waiting list.
