Abstract     Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) is the most frequent and successful of all transplantation procedures. This is possible because of exact criteria for donor tissue, avascularity of cornea, important in tissue preservation, improved surgical procedure and preventing and treatment of postoperative complications and graft rejection. Many eyes with corneal disorders previously not considered for transplantation are now successfully grafted. The indications for PK have changed over plast several years. PK is one of the most difficult eye surgery procedures. With atraumatic microsurgery, specular microscopy and postoperative treatment the success rate of PK is greater than 90%.
