Abstract     This article presents the 30-year development of hemostaseology at the Department of Transfusiology and Immunohematology. The laboratory was established in December 1975. In a short time, zealous employees aiming to obtain new knowledge soon introduced global tests (PT, TT, aPTT, fibrinogen, ethanol gel test, direct count of platelets, clot retraction, Rumpel Leed, bleeding time after Duke and Ivy, euglobulin lysis time) and the activity of coagulation factors. Through continuous education and training they have constantly upgraded and updated their skills and knowledge in the field of hemostaseology. At the beginning, the lab nurses took blood samples from the patients and provided doctors with valuable information about patients' clinical states. When the number of the patients for whom coagulation tests had to be made increased, qualified nurses at other hospital departments (clinical nurses) took over the procedure of taking blood samples. It is through hemostaseology that transfusiologists in the hospital turned into effcient consultants able to offer clinicians advice on how to prepare patients with acquired and congenital haemostatic disorders for surgery. In the context of the activities carried out in the field of hemostaseology, an outpatient clinic for diagnostic and treatment of coagulopathy was established in 1980. In this clinic, patients with artificial cardiac valves who suffer from venous thromboembolism and atrial fibrillation are treated with oral anticoagulants and low molecular weight heparin. Congenital or ac quiredhaemostatic disorders and different types of thrombophilia are diagnosed here. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
