Abstract     BACKGROUND. Tremor is a rhythmical, involuntary oscillatory movement of a body part caused by simultaneous or alternating contractions of antagonistic muscle groups. Some tremors are the only clinical sign of a specific disease, others represent only a part of a complex syndrome. There are four main hypotheses for the genesis of different types of tremor: hypothesis of mechanical tremor, hypothesis of reflex activation, hypothesis of central oscillators and hypothesis of cerebellum malfunction. Tremors can be differentiated according to topography, activation condition, amplitude and frequency. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive degenerative disorder of the central nervous system with tremor being one of its four main clinical features. Rest tremor is most common in PD, but postural and kinetic tremors are also not uncommon. AIM. Although many different tremor evaluation methods exist, clinical rating scales are still the most commonly used methods for tremor assessment in the clinical setting. On the one hand rating scales are only semi quantitative and prone to interobserver variability, but on the other instrumental measurement methods are complex, often unavailable and adapted for a specific type of tremor. The aim of our research was to develop a relatively simple quantitative method for quick, non-invasive measurements of tremor in ambulatory patients with PD. In the second part of our work we use this new method for measurements of rest tremor, postural and kinetic tremor in patients with PD during the apomorphine test.
