Abstract		Fractures due to osteoporosis are a significant cause of disability and death. Successful pharmacologic prevention of such fractures is based on efficient detection of osteoporotic patients with a high fracture risk. As osteoporosis has no clinical manifestations until there is a fracture, measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by DXA in combination with assessment of clinical risk factors is used instead. In all patients, secondary osteoporosis and other bone diseases should be excluded before treatment, using laboratory tests.
Summary		Osteoporozni zlomi vretenc in kolka so pomemben vzrok invalidnosti in smrti. Uspešno preprečevanje takšnih zlomov z zdravili sloni na učinkovitem odkrivanju osteoporoznih bolnikov z visokim tveganjem za zlom. Ker osteoporoza pred zlomi nima nikakršnih simptomov in znakov, za odkrivanje uporabljamo merjenje mineralne kostne gostote z dvoenergijsko rentgensko absorpciometrijo v kombinaciji s kliničnimi dejavniki tveganja za zlom. Pred zdravljenjem moramo z laboratorijskimi preiskavami izključiti sekundarne vzroke osteoporoze in druge bolezni kosti.
