Abstract     This study was aimed at understanding how experiences with work and daily life before and after the occurrence of chronic musculoskeletal disorders influenced the development of employees' perceptions of their possibilities to return to work. Six Slovenian employees with chronic MSD were purposely selected and interviewed in-depth. The narrative approach to gathering and analysing data was used. The findings showed that participants' narratives about work and life before and after the onset of MSD led the participants to perceive their possibilities for returning to work with mixed and interchanging feelings of hope, doubt and fear. Their experience with workplace and broader societal environment represented by health-care and disability institutional practices was most decisive in the development of the perception. The participants described their experience in the narrative of transformation from a life of stability and fulfilment enabled by meaningful work into a life of suspense about their future deprivation or engagement in meaningful work. The discussion of the findings concentrates on the experiences of marginalization and losing control in relation to workplace and broader societal environment.
