Abstract     In the Care Home Hrastovec there are accommodated people with special needs, who have been during their lifetime supplanted from the broader social community and network because of their peculiarities. The social community could not offer them efficient professional support and outputs that would serve their specialities and needs.Development of new branches of profession and transition of professional doctrine from strictly medical to psychosocial model of dealing with people inside the institution have demanded new, alternative approaches, which are leading to the deinstitutionalization of social care homes. Occupational therapists are being incorporated into the complex process of searching, modelling and incorporating people with special needs into new homes inside a local community. Selecting and preparing residential environment (narrow and broader) and at the same time incorporating these people into the broader community is an important task of the occupational therapist. This is certainly a challenge for the profession, which is broadening and exploiting alternative possibilities of working and offering outputs in psychosocial treatment inside special social care homes.
