Abstract		In the last twenty years, a marked rise in overweight and obesity among children and adolescents in several countries of the world was observed. Obesity in this age group is a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood; nevertheless, type 2 diabetes and signs of metabolic syndrome can already be present in adolescence. Obesity in childhood and adolescence often tracks into adulthood. It is therefore one of the most important current public health concerns. The data on obesity epidemiology in Slovenia show a condition similar to most other European populations.
