Abstract     There is no doubt that obesity represents an independent risk factor for numerous diseases. Statistically significant correlation between increased BMI and mortality has been proved. Evidence is building that obese people are more prone to elevated blood pressure, insulin resistance and consequent diabetes, hyperlipaemia, sleep apnea, skin problems, disruption of menstrual cycle, gastrointestinal disease, degenerative disease of knee joints etc. Although prevention of obesity would be most suitable, family physician most frequently meets with its consequences and complications. Obesity alone is rarely the main complaint of the patient during consultation. Family doctor frequently sees his patients and has ample opportunity to engage them in dialogue about change over time. As the underlying causes for obesity may vary greatly, the approaches to meet the patients" changing needs must be individualized. When the criteria for obesity (ITM> 30 or >27, when other risk factors for cardiovascular disease are high) are met, enhancing patients' readiness to change should begin. Well motivated patient and accordingly skilled therapist need to make a plan for lasting adjustments of life style and not only for temporary adjustments in body image. The plan for loosing weight should be simple. It should include establishing healthy life style, change of carting habits, regular physical activity, team work (dietitian, trainer, and psychologist) and constant support of the therapist and his team. The goals should be set consensually; they should be real and attainable. Failures are a constituent of every process of change. Follow up and analysis of results, enhancing new skills, method of small steps and support of the therapist help the patient to reach his goal in fighting obesity and all its consequences.
