Abstract | Cachexia is defined as a wasting syndrome in association with chronic diseases and is usually accompanied by inflammatory symptoms. From the physiological point of view is the cachexia chronic catabolic condition, which has in common certain metabolic aberrations with obesity. As an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality cachexia deserves medical attention and treatment. Nutritional support in combination with pharmacological and physical therapy represents the important adjunctive cachexia treatment. It has anticachectic effect and supports body functions during illness and specific therapy. The basic knowledge of both: cachexia mechanisms and their connections with metabolic disturbances in obesity, is necessary for optimal nutritional support in obese cachectic patients. | |
