Abstract     ABSTRACT Obesity is a chronic disease where immoderate accumulation of fat tissue increases morbidity and mortality. As in many other western countries obesity is increasing also in Slovenia, we can already talk about epidemic extension of overweight and obesity. We have 54,6% of the population who are overweight and 15% are obese. The share of children who have overweight or obesity is also increasing. Overweight and obesity are a significant cause of increased morbidity and mortality from chronic non-communicable diseases. Informing people about consequences of obesity, prevention and treatment of obesity fit among the most important preventive measures at the national level. In the process of development of the national strategic documents in the field of healthy nutrition and physical activity, contemporary measures and guidelines were considered, which were summarized in strategic documents of World Health Organization. Among them, the two most significant are Action Plan for Food and Nutrition Policy 2000-2005 and especially the resolution Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health that was adopted by World Health Organization in May 2004. CINDI Slovenia-the National programme of health promotion and prevention of chronic diseases, which was adopted and proposed for implementation by Health Council in March 1999-lined the integrated approach to prevention and control of risk factors and chronic diseases.
