Abstract     Bariatric surgery is the only effective treatment for long-term, sustained weight loss that results in a dramatic improvement in obesity-related medical problems. Numerous large series have demonstrated resolution of comorbidities, improved quality of life, and increased longevity. The evolution from open to laparoscopic bariatric surgery is underway, helping to spark increased interest in bariatric surgery worldwide. The benefits of laparoscopic bariatric surgery (e.g., less pain, quicker recovery, and fewer wound-related complications) have been shown to parallel those of other laparoscopic procedures; yet within the domain of laparoscopic bariatric surgery, there are many procedures from which to choose, each with advantages and disadvantages.
