Abstract     The aim of this paper is to assess the value of imaging modalities in the evaluation of patients with suspected renal colic and to suggest a rationale imaging approach for their investigation. As a sensitive test (95%), recently ultrasonography in the well hydrated patient, combined with plain film of the urotract, has been suggested as an alternative to the urography as an initial imaging test. Ultrasound specificity could be improved by measuring the resistibility index using pulsed Doppler method and assessment of the uretericjets with colour Doppler method for evaluation of existence and grade of the suspected obstruction. Urography is indicated only if the plain film, ultrasonographic and Doppler method findings are equivocal or if intervention is necessary.
