Abstract | Skeletal muscles are composed of fibre types that differ in their contractile and metabolic characteristics. In this paper we address the density and geometry of their blood supply. Soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were excised from control, denervated and reinnervated rat muscles. Capillaries were demonstrated with a triple immunofluorescent staining. Virtual slicer test probes in three perpendicular directions were superimposed at random into stacks of perfectly registered optical sections that were captured with a confocal microscope and length of capillaries adjacent to each individual muscle fibre (Lcap/Lfib) was measured per unit fibre length. Differences among slow and fast muscle and remodelling after denervation and reinnervation are discussed. | |
