Abstract		For providing safety in tunnels in the first place preventive actvity is important to prevent accidents and only then come acitvities that mitigate the consequences. Legislation which has to solve these problems is for the moment different in different countries and there is no unifred approach to tackle the problem, Research and experiments which will form solid basis for the legislation are still being performed. Tools for risk assessment in the tunnels are in different phases of development so the work in the field is momentarily in full swing. Recently multicriterial decision models are developed which will help in safety decision process for tunnels based on risk. These models will facilitate key points during decision process even though the the decisions will still be hard and sometirrees more political then professional. Limits in F-N diagrams for total risk are in diferent countries different and also differently interpreted. Our goal is to put primarily professional limits for tunnels based on demands of EU directive for tunnels.
